ERC, the Heineken Cup organisers, are delighted to announce that the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, will host the 16th Heineken Cup final on the weekend of 21/22 May, 2011. The 2011 Heineken Cup Final will be played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. It will be the sixth time that Cardiff has played host to the showpiece of the European club rugby calendar.
The Heineken Cup is Europe’s premier rugby union club competition, and is analogous to the UEFA Champions League in football (soccer). Professional teams from England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales compete with each country having their own qualification criteria. The cup is contested annually, with 24 teams split into six pools. The top eight teams from the pool stages qualify for the quarter finals; the four winners then contest the semi-finals; the two winners then play one another in the Heineken Cup final.
The WRU won the bid to host the world’s biggest club rugby final, which will return to the Welsh capital for the sixth time in 16 seasons.
The first two Heineken Cup finals were played at the old Cardiff Arms Park with the Millennium Stadium hosting three of the last eight finals.
